Founded in 1940 as "Conoco Louisiana Employees Credit Union" for employees and family members of Continental Oil Co., the credit union has grown steadily over the years and now offers services to members situated around the globe. As a result of the credit union policy "once a member, always a member", the membership ultimately became quite diversified. Consequently, in 2000 the membership approved to change the name to Heritage Credit Union, more fitting to the evolved membership makeup.

The credit union is a not-for-profit cooperative financial institution owned and operated by its members. Members elect the Board of Directors and Supervisory Committee who serve on voluntary basis and receive no monetary compensation or special privileges. The Board of Directors plays the vital role of charting the direction for credit union finances and operations. The Supervisory Committee monitors internal controls and accounting procedures as well as oversees the regular audits of credit union records.
